December, 1990. My fiance and I leave our small Connecticut apartment and drive to LaGuardia in New York for a flight to Phoenix, AZ, where we will spend Christmas with my family. My fiance confidently leaves his coat in the car. At the last moment I suggest that perhaps he should bring it, just in case. He looks at me like, well, I'm an idiot and leaves it in the car.
Phoenix was unnaturally cold that Christmas while Connecticut experienced higher than normal temperatures. There was snow floating through the palm trees.
When I lived in CA there were some unnaturally cold winters too... Anon is right, they don't last, you'll be swimming and sunbathing in no time, which makes me very jealous.
I like having different seasons, I especially like winter, but I am so totally unprepared for this kind of cold. My once beautiful courtyard is no more. The cold has killed a lot of my plants despite measures taken to insure that would not happen. I can't even look out there, it makes me want to cry. Damn old man winter!

From the -22 degrees on last Tuesday it warmed up here in Anchorage to a balmy -7 degrees today.
